What the January 2027 switch-off means for Isle of Wight businesses

What's happening?

The UK's old copper phone network — known as the PSTN, along with ISDN business lines — is being retired. Openreach has set 31 January 2027 as the national deadline. After that, calls run over the internet instead, often called VoIP or digital voice.

You may hear it called the landline switch-off, the digital switchover or the BT switch-off. They all mean the same thing.

Why it matters more than people think

Moving your desk phones is usually the easy part. The problem is everything else quietly connected to a phone line:

• card machines that still dial out over a line
• monitored security and fire alarms
• door entry systems and intercoms
• lift emergency phones
• telecare and personal alarms in care settings
• fax machines, franking machines and out-of-hours diverts

These are often installed and forgotten. If nobody checks them, the first sign of a problem can be an alarm that can't reach its monitoring centre, or a lift phone that doesn't connect.

Why Isle of Wight businesses should act early

On the Island, getting an engineer out can depend on availability and the ferry timetable, and every business will want its migration done in the same few months. Waiting until December means competing for the same diary slots. Starting now means you choose the date.

Do you need a new phone system?

Not always. Some existing systems can be adapted to work with digital lines. Others are due for replacement anyway, and a modern system brings extras like a mobile app, call recording and an AI receptionist. The right answer depends on your site, and a good installer will tell you honestly which applies.

What about power cuts?

Old copper lines carried their own power, so phones kept working in a power cut. Digital lines don't. For anything safety-related, such as lift lines, alarms and telecare, make sure there's battery backup, and consider 4G or 5G backup so a broadband fault doesn't cut you off either.

A simple checklist for your business

• List every device connected to a phone line, not just the phones.
• Check your contracts for line rental and equipment you're still paying for.
• Ask your alarm, lift and card-machine providers what they need from you.
• Make sure your broadband is reliable enough to carry your calls.
• Plan backup for anything safety-critical.
• Book your migration well before January.
